In the masterplan of the area commissioned
by the city of Ljubljana in 1994, this derelict industrial
site bordering on the high quality green area next to the
Sava river, was transformed into a mixed environment friendly
area. Urbana building, the essential element of the overall
scheme, was built first to function as the spine of the future
composition. The large volume of the building is structured
on several levels: from volumes of separate housing units
to volumes of separate apartments, to elevations layered with
varying panels and lines. The resulting structure is transformed
from a view-blocking uniform bulk into a dynamic generator
of motion.
The structure of the building that houses 145 apartments allows
a highly individual development of single apartment plan forms.
The 16 metres deep plan ensued from a combination of multi-layered
housing depth and the use of over-sized window surfaces.
